Consultation about children experiencing difficulties in school

It is very common for children go through a period of time in their school life when they experience difficulties of some kind. For some, these difficulties may be short lived and with the right help, they are soon back on track. For others, these difficulties may be more long term and they may need a prolonged period of support.

What is the aim of consultation?

The aim of consultation is to help teachers, parents and children to find solutions to school based problems.

What is consultation?

Consultation will usually involve a discussion with your child’s teacher to explore the nature of your child’s difficulties in school. Usually there will be an observation of your child within the classroom context to gain an understanding of how the environment may be affecting their behaviour. There may be an interview with your child to gain their view of the nature of their difficulties and possibly there may be some assessment work. It is often useful to hold a joint meeting between parents and school staff where you and your child’s teachers can share ideas about the difficulties your child is experiencing in school and ways forward.

Through this process of discussion, sharing of views and observation, interventions will be identified and a practical plan of action drawn up of ways your child can be supported.

Where does consultation happen?

In the school.

Who can benefit from consultation?

This approach can be useful in supporting children and young people aged 2 to 18 who are experiencing one or more of the following difficulties:

Children with medical diagnosis of autism, aspergers, ADHD and downs syndrome can also benefit from consultation.
